3. I ran out and bought this great album the very next day (summer of '72). I immediately dubbed the album to open reel tape and have loved this awesome music for almost 40 years. I still listen to the tape a lot, but I am selling the rarely played LP on eBay. If anybody wants a mint copy, look it up on eBay, It's a killer album! AM.

Jan 01,  · 'Ballade For San' has a muscular solo from Tomasz Szukalski on tenor and a delicate trumpet interlude from Palle Mikkelborg, Tomasz Stanko has a couple of good solos, and Rypdal and Szukalski are further featured elsewhere. Vesala does not solo but is a vigorous drummer and seems to control the music throughout.5/5(3).

5. A school-mate gave me this album in the seventies and I recorded it on reel-to-reel. The first half of the tape was Sabbath´s Paranoid, so I listened quite often. It´s A Beautiful Day was the perfect antithesis to Black Sabbath and I liked this album a lot. In fact I like it better than the all too pretentious, well-known first LP.

8. If one compares Satu (ECM, ) with Lumi (ECM, ), Vesala's first collaboration with Haarla, there's a significant stylistic shift towards more through-composed music. The free play that defined Vesala's earlier work is still there; but so too is more purposefully defined orchestration and an almost paradoxically structured chaos.
